Vintage Blanket Custom Order
My youngest daughter loved helping me tie dye this vintage Nubby Blanket! This customer wanted to update their heirloom fringe cotton bedding with a traditional spiral. Art and music ran through the women’s heritage. The blanket had been loved by three generations of women. I felt honored to be trusted with this project and inspired by the art and three generation photo. Latter I found out the blanket its self, in used condition is worth about $280. The memories are priceless!
Blanket project dye process
I started with a hot water bath and a textile detergent to remove any oils and stains. Then the blanket went into a soda ash soak to increase the Ph. Meanwhile Procion Dyes were mixed in mason jars and set aside. After an hour soda ash soak I lugged the dripping blanket into the washer where it went for a spin and drain, no wash..
Twisting the blanket required two tables that I climb onto and maneuvered the heavy damp blanket into this neat and tidy spiral. It was a work out! My dye bottles were filled, refilled and filled again. Each color was added to the blanket in several rounds of application through out the afternoon. I wanted to apply as much dye to one side without having to flip the blanket until It could not hold more dye. I used a large sheet of cardboard slid under the blanket and one on top to sandwich the blanket while I flipped it over. It was nerve rattling challenge to not loose my spiral in the flip. Keep in mind wrapping this in rubber bands and strings proved useless because of the size and weight of this blanket. Finally I was able to add the last layers of dye, overlapping some of the outer colors.
For the next two days this blanket batched covered with plastic in the hot California sun. Rinsing and washing followed and here are the wash out results for you to see. Beautiful, vibrant and saturated through and through! Outstanding and worth the effort for sure!
